A volcanic county for the most spirited travellers

There are more than 40 volcanoes and lava flows in north-east Catalonia that create the orography of La Garrotxa, the best example of a volcanic landscape on the Iberian Peninsula. Croscat and Santa Margarida are the most famous volcanoes, but there are many more in the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, along with extremely varied vegetation, with holm oak, oak and beech forests, like the Fageda d’en Jordà beech forest, which boasts an extraordinary landscape.

What you can do and what can you visit?

Any path in La Garrotxa is ideal for wandering because the orography, climate and soil make it a place with lush vegetation. In the Alta Garrotxa Natural Space, you’ll find many different outings of all kinds and at all levels. You can also check the Itinerànnia hiking path network or do a stretch of the Carrilet Greenway which connects Olot with Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

However, there are many other things to do in La Garrotxa, too! It is a county with loads of history and extraordinarily fascinating architecture.

Visit the Capsacosta Roman road in Bianya Valley, or wonder at the mediaeval constructions in Santa Pau or the old Jewish quarter in Besalú. And if you're interested in art, you can't miss the Display of Modernist and Noucentista Art of Olot, or the religious imagery and nativity scene display.

And when you get tired of having your feet on the ground, discover La Garrotxa from the air with a hot-air balloon ride.
